Here's Why Space Agencies Pump Water under Engine before Rocket Launch || The Dude Explains
You may have seen some Rocket Launches, on Youtube, or If very fortunate, Live. But you may have noticed that just before the Rocket Lifts off, there's a Massive amount of water pumped below the engine, in the Cavity of the Launchpad.
Ever wondered, why is it done? Well, here's why.
The Immense power of Rocket Engines
Modern-day rockets are mighty and dangerous, and with Great Power comes Great Sound. Most modern-day engines create an enormous amount of sound. That sound is so loud, that people can easily hear it from as far as 1-2 Kms. Imagine how loud it seems to the Astronauts sitting inside the Rocket.
Why is Water pumped below the Rockets?
You may know that Sound is a form of energy. It reflects back after colliding with almost any surface. Since the Rocket engines make so much sound, it means the Energy is also enormous. That energy is bounced off from the Launchpad and can strike the rocket, damage the equipment, and in the worst case, may cause fires inside the rocket.
To prevent all of this Water is pumped below the Rocket in the Launchpad cavity so that it absorbs most of the energy from the sound and also helps to Dampen the sound by a lot. It also helps cool the launchpad surface, from the extreme heat from the rocket engines.
If Water isn't pumped below the Rocket, the launch can be a terrible failure.
Hope you got it
